Everyone who is fairly new to web hosting, choosing the platform you are going to use for your server can be uneasy and even mind-bottling decision. Although there are several obscure choices still available, the most widely used Operating Systems (OSs) are the enterprise, or server, versions of Linux and Windows.

There seems to be a wide source of information regarding hosting, but it seems that the waters have been muddied by many authors' self-important personal opinions. This has resulted in some of the issues becoming rather unclear to intermediate users. Some technology bloggers have put quite a few hours, even years, into research on the subject, only to conclude that it really doesn't matter what server you decide to use. They claim that you should just make sure to choose a really good web hosting, instead of worrying about the type of server software they are running.

Are they right? Does it matter what kind of server hosts your site? Why? What is the difference between the two OSs, anyway?

Cost considerations

Microsoft manufactures and owns the rights to the entire Windows OS, from the recently retired XP to various flavors of Vista. Linux, on the other hand, is “open source” software and is usually free. What that means is that it can be more costly to install and run a Windows server, but this really would not affect you unless you are setting up the server personally – and if your eyes are glued to this article then it's a safe assumption that you are not doing so.

What this article will do for you is give you the rundown on how to make the right decision about the web-hosting server you choose. The costs inherent in running a server do not always affect the price of the hosting package as you might suspect. The fact that a single Windows server would be more costly to set up and run doesn't apply to a web-hosting firm that has installed several dozen or more. Getting the Window hosting package is usually a bit more expensive than the Linux hosting package, but not so much that you should disqualify it on price alone.

Make no assumptions

Individuals often assume that just because their PC operates on Windows, they should purchase a Windows hosting package. Not necessarily. Gaining access to your web account will usually be done through FTP or a control panel, and all servers support these methods. The most important difference in administrative site access is that some FTP commands are a bit different in Linux than in Windows and, of course, the FTP programs will usually be created for only one or the other.

Think about how you intend to put the server to use. Make your decision based on those facts. The web features that will run just fine on both platforms include PHP and the e-mail protocols, IMAP and POP. On the other hand, using ASP, Frontpage, the .Net environment, Access, Windows Streaming Media or other Microsoft technologies will likely require a Windows host. Linux offers only limited support, or none at all, when it comes to these technologies, meaning your “workaround cost” will be quite high and may lack the features you need.

Stability and growth

Different server platforms' reliability and stability records have been raised in many discussions, some rather contentious. The focus of many anti-MS rants has been that Windows is not a secure environment and is only popular because it is the OS for the majority of home-based PCs. As the most commonly used system, Windows has flaws and people tend to spend a lot of time looking for them, as well as exploiting them for harm.

However, Linux may just be the most common server type out there and, surprisingly, the success rate for hackers has been higher than expected, although not as high as for Windows. After all is said and done, the platforms and their security boil down to systems administration and server company management. If security is the main focus for you, then be sure to take the time to investigate the company that is hosting your site. Make sure that they have a reputation that is corroborated by other companies, not just their own marketing materials. This way you will have fewer worries about the server you are using.

Too close to call?

When it comes to the performance of the two servers, there is not a huge difference. Linux has been known to perform faster than Windows on some “cookie cutter” hosts that install Windows in its default, “all in one” package. Linux distributors, using an open-source application with more flexibility, can implement “extensible” packages with greater customizability. In normal situations, the performance of the two is comparable, but if system functionality is most important to you, this may have an impact on your final decision. Which direction that will send you depends on what you wish to compare, as the OSs do have some different strengths and weaknesses.

It is arguably a better use of your time to look for a good host rather than a good server model or OS. Linux and Windows developers are always working on ways to improve both systems. At this point they seem to be roughly equivalent when it comes to the security, features and reliability expected by the average home and small business user. This is not likely to change for some time. You must base your decision on the factors most important to you and your business, and in this neck-and-neck horse race, a clear winner is impossible to call. Eventually you will just have to saddle up with one or the other, and hit the track.

Municipal incineration is the largest point source of dioxins into the US and Canadian environments and among the largest sources of heavy metal contamination of the atmosphere. Of course the year 2004 is long gone, and these horrible numbers have undoubtedly been far surpassed in spite of efforts such as corporate trade-in programs.

When it comes to the environment do you want to be part of the solution and not part of the problem? If you do not want to be part of the problem avoid tossing that supposedly old computer onto a landfill. Did you know that your outcast computer remains will take decades to biodegrade and leach scads of poisonous chemicals into the environment during the process?

Why do everybody toss their computers? That is simple; given the computer industry's unending performance advances there is a widespread perception that you can no longer DO anything worthwhile with your outdated computers. This dangerous assumption is simply not true.

Do you really need Giga-everythings to get your work done and have your fun? Microsoft seems to think so. I remember when 128 Megabytes was a lot of memory. Of course I also remember when “Why would anyone ever need more than 640 Kilobytes of memory?” was the official party line expressed by none other than William Gates III himself.

I'm told that Damn Small Linux requires only 50 Megabytes of disk space, a 486 processor (do you remember what that is?) and 8 Megabytes of RAM. If you want to browse the Internet, you'll have to move up to 16 Megabytes of RAM and use the Dillo browser. The popular Firefox browser requires additional memory. Frankly, I wouldn't use such an underpowered computer for moderate or heavy Internet usage. But you can run Linux commands and learn how operating systems work on such computers. And you can play a multitude of games.

For every individual trying to resuscitate a 486 computer there are dozens trying to know what to do with an old Pentium such as my Pentium III 450 Megahertz computers with 128 Megabytes of memory purchased in 1999 or more powerful computers purchased several years later. Without extensive upgrades many of these computers won't run Windows Vista and may not run Windows XP. But they will run Damn Small Linux or other Linux versions alongside a full range of today's applications. Let's put them to work, learn Linux, and do our bit saving the environment.

We next see how Linux lets you control the computer, “obsolete” or not.

Regular Ubuntu Linux Users and the (Lack of Use of the) root User

When you install Ubuntu Linux, you create a user, which is the “first” user and you can also create more users if you need to. When you create the “first” user, you assign this user a password – and this one is very important!

It is required to log in to the desktop (at the Linux GUI login prompt) as the “regular” (non-root) user – and this password is also required to be able to do the equivalent of logging in as the root user – when you're working at the Linux prompt a terminal emulation window on the desktop.

By default, the root use is not “enabled” (not available) in Ubuntu and so you can't log in as this user – which is an innovative thing – as it stops anyone from logging in to the desktop as this user – which should never be done!

Example of Running the Linux sudo Command – To Start Working as the root User

You type in: sudo -i and then press Enter to change from working as a “regular” user to working as (the equivalent of) the root user in Ubuntu (and variations or derivatives, such as Kubuntu – see more on this further below).

And then you provide the password of the first user that was created on the system. After running the Linux sudo command, the prompt changes from a dollar sign to a number or hash sign (press Shift 3). To “go back” to working as a “regular”, run the exit command by entering the command name and pressing the Enter key.

This Linux version has its own “derivatives” (variations), and many of these end in “ubuntu”, such as Kubuntu.

There are a number of solutions available today and the options are often evolving, as the industry itself is very dynamic and in a state of flux as progress is made and new opportunities grows. A number of options are available, depending on the position of the buyer and cloud computing information is available for those who seek access to platform as a service, software as a service or infrastructure as a service to help them. A number of major “players” exist in the marketplace, the cloud servers, applications, and storage services. As cloud computing becomes more mature, a number of different integrators will emerge and management entities, such as enStratus, occupy the position of advisor, overseer and manager.

Industries are finding ways to get firmly established, and cloud computing is getting attention with its promised potentials of cost efficient principles, as it allows organizations to have the capacity to ramp up or down as the demand arises. Service providers themselves are causing some form of confusion among potential users as “software as a service” (SAAS) is mixed up with cloud computing, although these are two very distinct platforms. Cloud computing may be defined in broad terms, and it can be differentiate with SAAS in very distinct features and architecture.

For potential users looking for cloud computing information on software as a service, it is important to distinguish this option as it allows the ability to access complicated software without any upfront licensing, investment or server capacity. There is a proliferation of different applications and these are being targeted to users large and small, especially by the major players such as Google.

Platform as a service allows a more robust user to run an application on a provider's infrastructure. This is a great place for development.

Infrastructure as a service is an all-encompassing option, where a user basically outsources and uses the provider's servers, hardware, networking, support and storage capabilities.

The major organizations providing cloud computing information and facilities to users include Amazon Web Service, Rackspace, Terremark, Microsoft and a host of others, some smaller and more niche oriented. The leading cloud provider that is suitable for almost any kind of organization is probably Amazon. Rackspace offers on demand scalable website, storage hosting and application options. Windows Azure functions as an operating system in the cloud, where hosting, management and development of the Azure platform is coordinated.

There are many cloud computing information that is available for potential users, from the major organizations offering the service and it would come as confusing to some who are relatively new to this concept. This is where the selection of an impartial management entity should be considered, so that the organization's best interests can be served and the entire system can be “watched over” by a third-party entity at the same time.

Identity theft is a fact of life these days. Every day, a whole lot of people have their identity stolen by hackers and criminals who then use the information to open credit card accounts and buy things in their name. A lot of these people are very careful about protecting their sensitive information except when they are online. The Internet makes it very easy to get banking done and purchase things fast. However, if you are not be careful on what you do on your computer, you may be leaving yourself open to a hack attack.

I do not know about you, but I get a few scam emails everyday asking me to provide my bank account number to a person in Nigeria and receive $1M in return. You should avoid falling for these scams. It is the easiest way to compromise your sensitive information.

Phishing attacks are all too common these days. You should never click on links you get in your e-mail from companies such as Chase and PayPal. Not that these companies want to steal your information. Rather, there are many criminals who send emails to people, claiming to be from these companies. As soon as you click on these links and log in, your information is compromised.

Another way you can have your identity stolen is by being negligent about viruses when you are online. Many online sites such as a few P2P sites put harmful software on your computer. A keylogger can steal your password and send it to a third-party system. You should take time to buy an anti-virus and firewall system to protect yourself against hack attacks. It would be even better if you can afford a cheap laptop to just use for online banking.

Finally, never store your passwords on your computer and make sure you do not submit your password to a non-secure website. It is not only reckless, but can leave you susceptible to online identity theft. Buy Anti Virus with personal firewall.

While no tactic is foolproof here, by following the above steps you can significantly lower the chances of your data being stolen by criminals. You should also invest in an ID tracking service to get alerts in case your information is compromised. One ca not be too careful these days.

Looking for an Identity monitoring service to protect your ID theft? Try buy anti virus software to protect you.

So what is a virus?

A virus basically comprises a small program, a macro or a script designed to interfere with the normal functioning of a computer in various ways. At the grass root level these mischievous entities gain entry into our computers through external storage devices such as floppies, compact discs etc. However, with the advent of internet, viruses now have a much easier way to infiltrate our PCs. All that the warped mind of a virus programmer has to do now is write the necessary code and introduce it into the internet system via an e-mail or other web enabled procedure. The online network means the virus can infiltrate literally billions of PCs in a short period of time. Days, or perhaps weeks later, the virus gets identified and a battery of coders or software professionals get down to building the vaccine to quell the code. Another change to the virus landscape is that they are now largely used to profit financially by stealing valuable information whereas before maximum disruption was the aim.

Pleasure of proving someone wrong

Software companies often come out with inflated claims about the security of their latest creations which exaggerations of virus proof protection all to common. They claim that it is impregnable and that users will enjoy an uninterrupted experience when using the software. This is what generally kicks off the war. World over, there are people, mostly teenagers and those in their twenties who fancy breaking into the secure environment created by the big players in the software industry. They may not do this for any monetary gains, but to derive pleasure from being able to unsettle the claims made by the big names.

Best anti virus downloads – are free ones ok?

In order to combat viruses it has now become necessary for PCs users to protect themselves and not rely on their operating system and software to do it all. In response to this need there is naturally a large number of anti virus downloads available on the internet; some are good, some are bad and some will do you more harm than the original virus. You will also need to decide if you need to buy antivirus software or just get a free version. Like with most things, those that charge a fee are usually better although this is not always the case. However, it is worth noting that a major impediment with several free downloads is that many of them do not have an uninstall facility. This means that once you have chosen to install the free anti virus program and you will find it difficult to migrate to another version later. You will either have to leave both on your hard drive or reformat your hard disk. Another important factor is the lack of continuing support from the free providers, particularly regular updates. Viruses keep sprouting every second and if the provider does not update the software for the new viruses almost on daily basis, your computer security may be compromised. You should consider these two points carefully before deciding you want to save a bit of money and opt for the free versions.

Are you interested in computer network engineering, why not go all the way and take some computer network management training? Vocational schools that offer computer network management training can teach students how to productively interface computers with the many uses of specialized computer technology. Intended to provide students with extensive knowledge in computer network systems, this innovative training teaches students about the construction and maintenance of fiber optic networks, routers, and servers.

Computer network management training gives students basic, technical skills in network system administration. Students learn all the how-to on setup and maintenance of multifaceted computer network systems, as well as applications and troubleshooting.

Computer network management training provides essential skills in Internet security and information services, UNIX, web servers, and other computer-related topics. Computer networking career opportunities are diverse, and include a broad variety of positions related to information technology (IT). Generally, vocational computer network management training prepares graduates to enter the ever-expanding field of computer technology, leading to a career in help-desk support, computer repair, or network management.

Vocational schools that provide computer education usually offer a certificate of completion. Professional certification is available in a wide variety of specialty areas of network engineering and management (e.g. A+ certifications in PC hardware, software service and support, and/or CompTIA A+). Of course, students may opt for continuing their computer education by applying their entry-level skills toward a professional degree in Computer Science.
